SO I had to go to Walfart yesterday, and figured I would try a Bic pen again. I tried it next to my papermate, and the Mate was smoother with an easier to read ink. I remember the Bics used to give it up in a few weeks. My bet is they still do.

I've been using this pen my whole life without realizing just how genius it is. Its materials made me think it was extremely cheap and normal. But if you take a moment to appreciate its beauty, you realize how perfect this pen really is. The shape, ink, weight, everything is just perfect. I carry one on me everyday.

Just think of all those billions of pens, sitting in landfills. And contrary to the claims in this video, ballpoint pens do NOT write upside down, unless the refill is pressurised. I use fountain pens that are refillable (a bottle of ink lasts over a year): thus, less waste. And my fountain pens will write upside down, due to capillary action. They also look much cooler than Bic pens, of which I have used and lost many. I haven't lost a fountain pen in over 40 years, and I can used far more colours and shades of ink than you'll find in any Bic. My current favourite ink colour is called Vampire Red: it's the colour of dried blood and it's truly marvellous to use.

One curious bit of information was left out from this posting. The single major design change on the Bic pen over the years was on the lid, which originally did not have a hole on its tip, and this hole is meant to save lives; childrens lives, that may swallow it and have it be lodged on their throats. The hole allowed the children to keep breathing until they were taken to an emergency room at a hospital where it could be safely removed.

The ball has been tungsten carbide rather than stainless steel since 1961 as it's a much harder wearing material (Tungsten carbide has a similar hardness to sapphire, with diamond being one of the very few materials that's even harder). They're also the go to example for how quality products aren't necessarily expensive products. Bic lighters are impressive for the same reason.

I *hate* this pen. It's the cheapest piece of shit possible - which is exactly why so many people buy it - and it feels every bit as cheapy-trashy as it is. Oh and... your comparison between literacy rates and pen pices is completely idiotic. That is, at best, correlation, but by no means a causal link.

BIC is one of the few ball point pens that don't dry up. I've had BIC pens lying in drawers and cupboards, forgotten for years, that still worked as well as on the day I bought them, while far more expensive ones don't work anymore already after six months. In the 1960s, when I was at school, BIC pens were supplied to us by the school and they looked exactly like they do today. We used to take them apart and use them as pea shooters. Sorry about that Monsieur Bich.
